ED PERKINS’ BIO

Ed Perkins is a caring person. He will do whatever he can to make this world a better place. He was born in Monroe Louisiana. At a very young age he and his family moved up north for a better life.

At the age of six he lost a childhood friend to a car accident. That same year he lost another childhood friend that he had taught to walk. She was murdered by her alcoholic mother. Shortly after that he lost his aunt and uncle. He also lost his first dog. He witnessed the result of a stabbing. These events all happened before he reached the tender age of nine.

At the age of eleven he was sent away to a youth home and later was sent to a home for dependent neglected boys. Mr. Perkins was happy to be placed in this home because of all the pain and suffering that he felt from the loss of so many loved ones. He was expelled because of racial accusations.

Five days after turning seventeen Mr. Perkins was enlisted in the U.S. Army. He spent most of his ten years of service overseas. After returning from the military he became a teacher for at risk students. Unhappy with the red tape and politics, as well as the lack of parental involvement, he resigned and started his journey of self-employment. He worked as private investigator, bodyguard, locator of missing people, expert witness in child custody cases for attorneys and owner of a small newspaper. He became a computer instructor at the college level, among other ventures. He also became an ordained minister after years of running away from the calling. He comes from a family of ministers.

Mr. Perkins has always written songs and poems. While in college after serving his country, he took a course in journalism. He wrote about the Ku Klux Klan. His instructor accused him of plagiarism because she had never heard him use a large vocabulary. She also questioned his knowledge of the Ku Klux Klan. Insulted by the accusations, Mr. Perkins dropped her class. This event brought back a painful childhood memory. At about the age of twelve he won $500.00 in a drawing contest. When he went to pick up his prize and contest officials saw the color of his skin, he was told that the money had been given to someone else. He settled for movie tickets for two. As a result of this incident, Mr. Perkins turned his back on his drawing ability. Mr. Perkins decided to break the pattern of allowing others to define who he was and re-enrolled in the journalism class with a different instructor and received an A.

When his brother Ricky was diagnosed with cancer, Mr. Perkins started writing again as a means of coping with the pressure of his brother’s illness. He was very close with his brother and had a friendly competitiveness with him. From the onset of his brother’s illness to his passing, which was approximately one year, Mr. Perkins wrote over 2,500 songs and poems. Some of the poems and songs were placed in a book entitled “Straight From The Heart - A Collection of Spiritual Poetry Inspired By God”. The book has touched many lives. It has been read in hospitals, prisons, airports, libraries, homeless shelters and various countries.

Cancer has touched Mr. Perkins’ family in a devastating way. His father, sister and brother have passed away with cancer. Some of his other siblings have been stricken with this disease as well. Mr. Perkins felt a strong desire to do something for those that have been and might be diagnosed with this terrible illness. Because of the childhood abuse inflicted on his friends, Mr. Perkins feels compelled to give the victims a voice, so he is donating a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the book to cancer research and child and spousal abuse awareness. He is seeking input from various organizations and communities in this worthwhile endeavor.

Mr. Perkins continues to seek and nurture friendships with others of different ethnic backgrounds. He considers himself to be an ambassador of mankind, fighting for equality for everyone.
